Overwhelming majority of the local community around Heathrow support a third runway

Heathrow has today (18 June) welcomed news that more than two thirds of residents around the airport support a third runway (68%), as they continue to progress their plan for expansion.

The major new poll by Savanta of more than 9,000 people is the most comprehensive local polling on expansion to date. It finds that support is highest in Slough, at 82%, and is primarily driven by the opportunities for jobs (77%) and the boost to the local economy (50%).

Confirmation of the strong support held locally follows public backing for Heathrow’s plan from unions Unite, Community and GMB as well as business groups including the British Chambers of Commerce, the Confederation of British Industry, the Federation of Small Businesses and Make UK.

Heathrow’s plan, which is built upon many years of consultation and engagement with local communities, is also supported by local chambers, colleges and universities across West London and beyond.

With a strong track record in delivering major infrastructure projects and carrying out long-term consultation with the local community along with a credible, privately-financed plan of action, Heathrow stands ready to finally make the third runway a reality.

Becky Coffin, Heathrow’s Director of Communities and Residential Property, said: “Our plan for Heathrow expansion has been built on a decade of consultation with our local community. Securing their strong support for our plan has been an absolute priority. A third runway will create transformational employment opportunities for those closest to us, driving skills and jobs for young people.

“This shows what we have long known, that our expansion plan enjoys robust backing locally as well as nationally. Now we need the Government to act decisively and ensure we can deliver at pace to rapidly unlock opportunities and growth for West London and the whole UK.”

Andrew Dakers, Chief Executive, West London Business, said: “This new polling reflects what we hear every day from our members – that Heathrow’s role in connecting West London and our fantastic businesses to the world, is hugely valued and supported locally.

“The expansion of Heathrow, and the jobs, growth, and trading opportunities it will bring, will strengthen our area’s global connectivity and reach. Heathrow has the right plan and team to deliver, and is supported locally, nationally, and by business groups and trade unions alike. It’s time to get on with it – and this polling shows support is only strengthening over time.”
