A tale of two cities - photographer captures art in mobile

A new exhibition by photographer Henry Reichhold, opening at Heathrow Terminal 5 on the 2nd March, will feature vast panoramas of two of the world’s most famous cities, Mumbai and Dubai – taken using just a mobile phone.

Forgoing large cameras and lenses, the installation features more than 90 images contrasting the streets of poverty-stricken Mumbai – the city made famous by Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ – with the dizzying heights of Dubai, one of the world’s fastest developing cities.

The images, which were captured in November 2009 over the course of eight days using a Nokia N86 8MP, were created by 'stitching' many separate shots together to produce unique depictions of each city and its inhabitants.  As well as intimate portraits from the slums of Mumbai, the exhibition features a giant 3.5 x 10 metre print (the equivalent size to a London bus) of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

Says Henry, ‘The Nokia N86 Explore exhibition visually maps the polar opposites of two of the world’s most extreme urban dwellings: Dubai is a showcase of extraordinary wealth, development and architecture, whilst Mumbai is an extraordinarily vibrant city driven by the resilience and incredible good nature of its people who live for the most part in poverty.

“It also goes to show the potential and range of new multimedia communication devices which are able to capture the world in a way never previously thought possible.”

The exhibition will run until May 2010 in Terminal 5’s Expo area, which was launched to provide opportunities for cultural creations and events that would not normally receive a high level of exposure. Celebrating the best of the UK’s culture and commerce, previous art and exhibitions include installations by students at Goldsmiths College a five metre high Poppy man, and Henry’s previous exhibition entitled ‘Connected Worlds’.

Mark Murphy, operations director at Terminal 5 said, ‘We’re delighted to welcome Henry Reichhold back to Expo at Heathrow Terminal 5. His photographs not only add a dynamic visual presence to the airport but also challenge preconceptions of what can be achieved with a mobile.   It’s very inspiring and certainly encourages us all to celebrate technology and create our very own mobile artworks.’

The Nokia N86 Explore exhibition will launch on Tuesday 2nd March and run until May 2010.
