A huge towering five metre high tribute to the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal has been erected in Heathrow Terminal 5. Passengers checking in will be greeted by an impressive five metre high Poppy man comprising of over 8,000 poppies.
This Poppy Man is no paperweight though. Weighing in at over 850kg, his construction includes more than 75m² of wire mesh, 40m of steel work and 16m² of steel plate. Over 1,000 man hours were dedicated to building and installing Poppy Man in Terminal 5 – sustained by in excess of 500 cups of tea. Poppy Man will be displayed until 12 November.
In addition a rain of poppies will feature on every media screen in check-in during the two minute silence at 11am on the 11 November.
Mark Murphy, Terminal 5 Operations Director, says: “We are delighted to be working with the Royal British Legion this year. We know our passengers care about the work done by the Legion and it is, frankly, a privilege to be able to play our part in supporting the campaign this year”.
