Lycra and pompoms were in full force as Heathrow staff and volunteers took part in a Cheerleading Challenge lead by a team of professional cheerleaders at Terminal 5 on Wednesday 5 October in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
This challenge launched a new Macmillan EXPO at Heathrow, helping the charity reach more people affected by cancer. Macmillan Cancer Support is Heathrow's Charity of the Year until March 2012 and through the generosity of passengers and staff, Heathrow hopes to raise £150,000. Money raised so far is helping to fund a local Macmillan service at the West Middlesex Hospital, covering the neighbouring boroughs of Isleworth and Richmond upon Thames.
Cheryl Monk, Heathrow’s Head of Community Relations said: “Our challenge was a great success and the cheerleaders showed just what hard work their routines are. It has been a great opportunity for us to raise awareness about Macmillan Cancer Support and the work they do. Staff across the airport got to improve their fitness, have some fun and raise funds for this important charity.”
Every day in the UK, 822 people face the devastation of a cancer diagnosis. Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. Be it medical support from its nurses and professionals, financial support from its grants, or practical support from its information services – Macmillan aims to be there every step of the way for people living with cancer.
Erika Razzaque, account manager at Macmillan Cancer Support for the Heathrow partnership, comments: “Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. But people don’t have to go through it alone. Thanks to the EXPO space at Heathrow, we can let more people know that the team at Macmillan is there for them and how they can get involved and support us too. All funds raised will really make a positive difference to the lives of people living with cancer and their family and friends.”
