Heathrow delivers more for Wales as expansion programme gathers pace

Wales

  • Cardiff earmarked to host Business Summit in 2018 giving SMEs from across Wales the opportunity to help build Heathrow’s 3rd runway
  • Seven Welsh sites – from across the country make longlist in the hunt for Heathrow’s Logistics Hubs
  • Chosen Logistics Hubs will participate in offsite construction of the 3rd runway infrastructure, bringing jobs and economic boost to Wales

Wales could benefit further from the building of Britain’s next runway as seven Welsh sites have made the longlist in the hunt for Heathrow's Logistics Hubs. The news comes as the UK’s biggest airport also confirms that a ‘meet the buyer’ Business Summit will take place in Cardiff on 11 July 2018.

Another milestone in the delivery of Heathrow expansion, the unveiling of the Welsh, longlisted Logistics Hubs follows a commitment made by the airport to shake-up the UK construction industry by using expansion to revolutionise the way Britain builds major infrastructure. Sixty-five locations across Britain remain in the running, all bidding to participate in the build of a national asset needed for the whole of the UK. Heathrow expansion is the first major infrastructure project that will pioneer the large-scale use of logistics hubs, which will lead to jobs being created across the UK.

In addition to this, SMEs across Wales will also have the opportunity to attend a Heathrow Business Summit in Cardiff in July 2018.  These summits ensure that businesses up and down the country can learn of, and benefit from, the opportunities available to them when building of Britain’s new runway starts. The day will be made up of ‘speed-dating’ style appointments between SMEs and Heathrow’s biggest suppliers, and will be held in partnership with the Welsh Government

These major announcements were made at Heathrow's 2017 Supplier Awards Ceremony; an event that recognises the achievements of the organisations across the UK that currently form part of Heathrow's supply chain.

Heathrow's commitment to delivering for the whole of the UK is echoed by the airport's supply chain, and as it expands it will continue to work with suppliers, local governments and public sector groups in all corners of the country, looking to boost jobs and growth across the UK.

Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns said

“I’m delighted to see seven different sites across five locations in Wales making the long list of potential sites for a Heathrow logistics hub. Their inclusion highlights the real opportunities Heathrow has to build networks and partnerships with Welsh businesses and our local expertise.

“The UK Government is committed to opening the infrastructure support channels to boost the Welsh economy. By supporting the construction of a new runway at Heathrow, we are sending a clear message to the world that the whole of Britain is open for business.

Economy Secretary, Ken Skates said:

“The construction of Heathrow’s third runway offers huge economic opportunities for businesses right across the UK and I am determined that Welsh companies will be given all the help and support they need to be right at the heart of this significant infrastructure development.

“With this in mind I am pleased to confirm that next year the Welsh Government will be hosting a second Heathrow business summit, with the specific intention of bringing large suppliers and smaller businesses together to help them secure some contracts associated with the new runway.

“I am also really encouraged that seven Welsh Government backed sites remain in the running to be one of the four Heathrow logistic hubs.

“Securing the location of one of those hubs here in Wales would be a significant achievement, bringing with it huge economic benefits, and the Welsh Government will continue to do all it can behind the scenes to promote the Welsh sites.”

Lord Deighton, Heathrow’s Chairman, added:

“Heathrow’s third runway will rely on talent from all over Britain helping to create a national asset for generations to come. This means new procurement opportunities for businesses in every region, helping drive growth and investment into local communities in all corners of this country. The third runway is not a London centric project – it is one we are opening up to the whole of the UK, asking for its skills and expertise to help build an asset this country so desperately needs to safeguard its future prosperity.”
