The £1 billion home for Heathrow's 20 million Star Alliance passengers has moved a step closer, as BAA signed its largest ever construction contract.
The £800 million deal to build Terminal 2 was signed at Heathrow today by Colin Matthews and Steven Morgan, BAA chief executive and capital director respectively and Ignacio Clopes and Ray O’Rourke of HETCo, a joint venture between Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O'Rourke
HETCo was appointed to construct Terminal 2 in 2008, following its selection, through competition, as one of BAA's nine construction suppliers.
When construction is complete, Terminal 2 will be one of the most modern airport terminals in the world, offering passengers improved service and facilities and faster connections.
Colin Matthews, chief executive of Heathrow, said: "Heathrow is improving and our exciting plans for Terminal 2 reflect our ambition to make passengers' journeys better and position Heathrow as the European hub airport of choice for the world's airlines and passengers."
The construction contract signed facilitates the excavation of the site, building of the terminal’s foundations and a main structure which occupies a footprint of approximately 40,000 square metres. HETco will also construct the roof and facade of the new terminal and build ten aircraft parking stands.
HETCo will also be responsible for the full coordination and integration of the baggage systems and the building’s information controls systems both within the new terminal and into the Heathrow wide network.
