The BAAnd's 'world tour' of Heathrow Airport in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

‘The BAAnd’ – Heathrow’s in-house band – performed a series of live gigs across the airport recently in aid of Heathrow’s charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The group started their tour in Terminal 1 where they were introduced by BAA Chief Executive, Colin Matthews, who said: “I am proud of the commitment, dedication and generosity being shown by staff to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. All money raised will really make a positive difference to the lives of people living with cancer.”

The band then went on to perform across all the terminals and at the Compass Centre and Heathrow Point West offices, delighting passengers and staff with a medley of songs including Can’t Stop, by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rio by Duran Duran and Bring Me to Life by Evanescence amongst others.

To date, the BAAnd have raised £5,439 which was further boosted by a £2600 donation from the Heathrow Community Fund; a fund dedicated to supporting airport staff with charitable fundraising efforts. Anyone wishing to donate can do so at: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/TheBAAnd2011

Jason Holmes, from the BAAnd, said: “We had a ball performing across the airport and really appreciate the support and donations we received. Please help Macmillan Cancer Support continue their vital work by donating online.”

Every day in the UK, 822 people face the devastation of a cancer diagnosis. Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. Be it medical support from its nurses and professionals, financial support from its grants, or practical support from its information services – Macmillan aims to be there every step of the way for people living with cancer.

Erika Razzaque, account manager at Macmillan Cancer Support for the Heathrow partnership, comments:  “Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. But people don’t have to go through it alone. Thanks to the BAAnd and Heathrow, we can let more people know that the team at Macmillan is there for them and how they can get involved and support us too.”

The BAAnd's terminal tour warmed them up for the battle of the bands event Construction Rocks 2011 on October 20 at the Grand Hall, Camden www.constructionrocks.com. Here they rocked their way to successfully defend their title of ‘Best Fundraiser’. Construction Rocks is organised by Nigel Fraser of BAA and Bill Price of WSP.
