- Passengers award Heathrow ‘Best Airport Western Europe’ and ‘World's Best Airport Shopping’ accolades
- Awards follow a year of record-breaking passenger satisfaction scores and passenger numbers at the UK’s hub airport
For the third year running, travellers from around the globe voted Heathrow the ‘Best Airport in Western Europe’, and for an impressive eighth year, the ‘Best Airport for Shopping’ in the Skytrax’s World Airport Survey. Heathrow was presented with the two important titles at the 2017 Skytrax World Airport Awards ceremony held in Amsterdam last night.
Announcing the awards, Skytrax highlighted the excellent quality and diverse choice of Heathrow’s shops across its four terminals. Last year, Heathrow opened new personal shopping lounges in Terminals 2 and 5, a Harry Potter shop, and a blow dry bar in Terminal 5. Heathrow now has over 400 luxury brands based at the airport, along with two restaurants run by Michelin-starred chefs.
Investments in airport facilities, along with the Heathrow team’s dedication to service, led to the airport achieving its best ever annual passenger satisfaction scores in 2016, while welcoming a record 76 million passengers.
John Holland-Kaye, Heathrow Chief Executive said:
“Our team is constantly striving to deliver the best airport service in the world, and I am delighted to get such a strong endorsement from the people whose opinion matters most – our passengers. We will continue to improve by investing in better connecting journeys, offering a more personalised and friendly service, and welcoming exciting new retail and hotel options.”
The Skytrax awards come just one week after the Airports Council International (Global) announced Heathrow as the Best Airport in Europe amongst airports with over 40 million passengers for 2016.

Notes to Editors:
The Skytrax World Airport Survey is widely regarded as the quality benchmark for the world airport industry, assessing customer service and facilities across 388 airports. The World Airport Awards are independent of any airport control or input and are therefore an impartial benchmark of airport excellence and quality.
Heathrow was represented at the awards by Derek Provan, Future Heathrow, Director who collected the “Best Airport in Western Europe” award, and Chris Annetts, Heathrow’s Retail and Service Proposition Director who collected the “World’s Best Airport for Shopping” award.
In 2016, 82% of passengers rated their journey in Heathrow as either ‘very good’ or ‘excellent.’ This represents approximately 62 million Heathrow passengers - an increase of 1 million more ‘happy’ passengers than in 2015. In 2006, only 41% of passengers rated their experience as either ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’. Since then, Heathrow has invested more than £11 billion to enhance the airport experience which has dramatically transformed the airport’s performance for passengers and airline customers alike.
Heathrow is the UK's hub airport, home to more than 80 airlines, connecting to more than 180 destinations. Every year, Heathrow welcomes over 70 million passengers with a commitmen to 'making every journey better.' Following an investment of more than £11 billion over the last 10 years, passengers have now voted Heathrow the 'Best Airport in Western Europe' three years in a row, and 'Best Airport for Shopping' eight years in a row.
