Football fever kicks off at Heathrow

Football is coming home as Heathrow celebrates the arrival of the UEFA Champions League trophies on Thursday 12 May by creating the first ever football pitch inside an airport.

The pitch has been installed in Terminal 5 Arrivals to give passengers a chance to experience the beautiful game straight after landing in the birthplace of football. The pitch has been specially made for the occasion from artificial grass and measures 28 square metres.

Five of the UK’s top freestyle footballers will be showcasing their talents and passengers will be invited onto the pitch to learn tricks with them.

The UEFA Champions League trophies for both the men and women’s finals will be on display at the same time in Terminal 5 Departures for passengers to get up close with them, before the men’s trophy is handed over to either Manchester United FC or FC Barcelona in front of a global audience of millions at Wembley on 28 May. The women’s final will take place at Craven Cottage on 26 May.

Nick Cullen at Heathrow said: "Football is an important part of our national heritage and fans will be arriving at Heathrow from all over the world to watch the UEFA Champions League final so it’s great to be able to give them a sneak preview of the trophies and celebrate the sport with them."
